Sweet Marjoram

Marjoram is a somewhat cold‑sensitive perennial herb or low‑growing undershrub, known for its sweet pine‑like and citrusy aroma. In several Middle Eastern countries, the term “marjoram” is used interchangeably with oregano, and the names sweet marjoram and knotted marjoram help distinguish it from other species within the Origanum genus. The word marjoram (from Old French majorane and Medieval Latin majorana) does not derive from the Latin maior (“greater”), despite the similarity in spelling. The plant is native to Cyprus and southern Turkey and has a long cultural history in the Mediterranean region. It was familiar to both the Greeks and Romans, who regarded marjoram as a symbol of happiness and incorporated it into various culinary and ceremonial traditions. Its gentle flavour and aromatic qualities have contributed to its enduring use across many cuisines.
