Romaine Lettuce

Romaine, also known as Cos Lettuce, is a type of Greek lettuce that forms tall, upright heads with sturdy leaves and a pronounced central rib. Unlike many other lettuce varieties, romaine is notably tolerant of heat. Like other dark leafy greens, it contains antioxidants that are believed to contribute to cancer‑preventive benefits. The thick ribs—especially on the older outer leaves—often contain a milky sap that gives romaine its characteristic fine, slightly bitter herbal flavour. It is the classic lettuce used in Caesar salad and is also widely incorporated into Middle Eastern dishes. According to the 2011 edition of the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the chlorophyll found in dark leafy greens such as romaine may help reduce levels of carcinogens associated with colon and liver cancers. This combination of crisp texture, robust flavour, and nutritional value has made romaine one of the most popular lettuces worldwide.
