Green Basil
Basil, or Sweet Basil, is the common name for the culinary herb Ocimum basilicum, a member of the Lamiaceae (mint) family and known in some English‑speaking regions as Saint Joseph’s Wort. Basil originated in India, yet it was already familiar to early Greek and Roman scholars such as Theophrastus and Dioscorides. It is a half‑hardy annual plant and is best recognized as a key culinary herb in Italian cooking, while also playing a major role in the cuisines of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Taiwan. Depending on the species and cultivar, basil leaves can carry flavors reminiscent of anise, offering a strong, aromatic, and often sweet fragrance that makes the herb highly versatile in both fresh and cooked dishes.
